RATTIS BOOKS

Creating an adventurous new identity to launch an ambitious start-up

Rattis Books is a London-based independent publisher, focused on non-fiction from around the world. As a new imprint in a large and established market, they needed a strong identity to launch themselves and promote their authors and books to readers.

The challenge was to create an identity that was an encapsulation of the usual name and the publisher’s vision of discovery and exploration.

An inspiring name
Derived from the Latin ratis—meaning raft, ship or, more broadly, vessel—the name itself inspired the new symbol: a carefully crafted balancing act of a raft, a book and a subtle capital ‘R’.

As a partner to the symbol, we created a bespoke word mark based on an old Stephenson Blake typeface, Engravers Roman. Together, the logo and wordmark have become a strong signature for the growing publisher.

First impression
For the imprint’s launch, we designed the first title: Tiro — a well researched and passionate look at football’s impact around the world, from the Amazon to the Alps. The symbol sits proudly on the spine, where it captures the essence of adventurous exploration of the both the book and publisher.

Growing and expanding
The smart and sophisticated identity we created has allowed Rattis Books to establish itself in the market and expand further into the non-fiction world with its sister company, Rattis Films.

“Everyone is just blown away in all directions by the new brand. The logo launched and the sail caught the wind.”

Arka Paul, Founder, Rattis Books
